Most Muslims read the Quran daily but leave the pages without understanding what they just recited. It’s one of the quiet disconnects in modern Muslim life: knowing this is the word of Allah, wanting to feel its guidance, and finishing the recitation with the meaning still out of reach.
Our Quran Tafseer course closes that gap. You study the actual meaning of each verse — its language, its context, why it was revealed, and how it applies to your life today — with a qualified tutor guiding you one lesson at a time. In clear English. From wherever you are in the world.
What Tafseer actually is (and what it isn’t)
Tafseer is the classical Islamic science of Quranic interpretation. It’s not translation, and it’s not personal opinion. It’s a structured, scholarly explanation of each verse that draws on:
- The Arabic language — the exact meaning of words, roots, and grammatical structures.
- The context of revelation (Asbab an-Nuzul) — what was happening when a verse was revealed.
- Other verses of the Quran that explain each other.
- Authentic hadith of the Prophet ﷺ that clarifies the meaning.
- The understanding of the Companions and the early scholars who lived closest to the revelation.
This is the difference between reading a translated line — which gives you the words — and studying Tafseer, which gives you the meaning, the depth, and the application. One informs. The other transforms.
Who this course is for
- Muslims who can read the Quran but want to finally understand it.
- Adults, reverts, and parents who feel disconnected from the meaning of daily recitation.
- Non-Arabic speakers who want lessons taught fully in clear English.
- Students who’ve memorised parts of the Quran and want to learn what they’ve memorised.
- Anyone preparing for deeper Islamic study or Da’wah work.
- Learners who want a structured, scholar-guided path — not scattered YouTube videos.
Do you need to know Arabic first?
No. This course is designed for English-speaking Muslims, and every explanation is given in clear English. When Arabic terms come up — and they will — they’re explained before they’re used, so you never feel lost in vocabulary you don’t recognise.
The one prerequisite is basic Quran reading ability, because you need to be able to read the Arabic text as you study its meaning. If you can’t read Quran yet, start with our Learn to Read Quran course first. Some students take both in parallel: reading in one lesson, Tafseer in the next.
If you already speak Arabic, your tutor will draw on the language more deeply as you progress. If you don’t, you’ll still develop a rich understanding of the Quran through the classical explanations delivered in English.
Choose the Tafseer path that fits your goal
Tafseer is not one journey. Different students want different depth, and the course adapts to yours.
- Juz Amma Tafseer — study the meaning of the short surahs you recite in daily prayer. The best starting point for most students.
- Selected Surahs Tafseer — focus on specific surahs like Al-Fatiha, Yaseen, Al-Kahf, Al-Mulk, Ar-Rahman, or key portions of Al-Baqarah.
- Complete Quran Tafseer — study the full Quran surah by surah in a long-term structured programme.
- Thematic Tafseer — study Quranic themes across surahs (patience, prayer, family, accountability, mercy, and more).
Your tutor helps you choose the right path in your first sessions and adjusts as your interests grow.
The classical Tafseer sources we teach from
Our lessons draw on the recognised classical works of Tafseer that scholars have relied on for centuries:
- Tafseer Ibn Kathir — a hadith-based commentary widely regarded as the most authentic classical work.
- Tafseer As-Sa’di — a clear, accessible commentary excellent for beginners.
- Tafseer At-Tabari — the earliest comprehensive Tafseer, foundational to the tradition.
- Tafseer Al-Qurtubi — strong on legal rulings and jurisprudence from the verses.
- Tafseer Al-Jalalayn — a concise, precise summary of meanings.
Your tutor doesn’t lecture you through dense classical texts. They translate the essential insights of these scholars into clear lessons you can actually use — the language explained, the context set, the meaning drawn out, and the practical application shown.
How our online Tafseer classes work
Every session is live and one-to-one with your tutor over a simple video call. This matters more in Tafseer than in almost any other subject: you need to ask questions, hear scholarly reasoning, and think out loud with someone qualified. Pre-recorded lectures can’t do that.
A typical session moves through a passage of Quran with four layers of study:
- Language — what the key Arabic words actually mean.
- Context — when and why the verses were revealed.
- Explanation — the classical scholarly understanding.
- Application — what this means for your life today.
You leave every lesson with a passage of Quran you now understand at a level you didn’t before. Over months, that changes how you read, how you pray, and how you engage with your faith.

Why students choose Quran Lights for Tafseer
Qualified tutors trained in classical Tafseer sciences
Our Tafseer instructors are trained in the classical Uloom al-Quran and know how to explain scholarly interpretations in accessible English. They don’t oversimplify, and they don’t drown you in academic jargon — the middle path that actually makes learning stick.
Rooted in classical sources, not personal opinion
Every lesson draws on recognised classical works — Ibn Kathir, As-Sa’di, At-Tabari, Al-Qurtubi, Al-Jalalayn — so you’re learning the Quran as centuries of scholarship have understood it, not one teacher’s personal take.
English-first, no Arabic assumed
All explanations are delivered in clear English. Arabic terms are always defined before they’re used. You’ll pick up Quranic vocabulary naturally as you progress, without ever feeling you needed to be Arab to belong in the class.
Choose a male or female tutor
Male and female tutors are available across all levels. Sisters can request a qualified female instructor throughout their Tafseer journey.
Flexible, one-to-one, worldwide
Class times fit around work and family. Every session is one-to-one, so questions get answered — not deferred to a Q&A that never comes. Students join from the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, the Gulf, and worldwide.
A clear path forward
When you finish Juz Amma Tafseer, you can move into selected surahs. From there, complete Quran Tafseer. Along the way, students often add Quranic Arabic to deepen their linguistic access. Your tutor will help you plan what comes next.
